Suggestions
For air travel...
- Remember that aiir travel can be particularly cumbersome because of security restrictions, unpredictable weather, and airline delays. When flying, always arrive at the airport at least two hours ahead of time - and check airport status.
- Booking nonstop flights eliminates annoying layovers and can reduce travel time and stress significantly.
For road trips...
- Buy a Benchmark state atlas to have access to crisp, colorful and detailed maps for Western road travel. Benchmark Maps publishes high quality Road & Recreation atlases for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexio, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.
- Put together a travel kit in advance for each trip. Include an intinerary, reservation info, guides ordered from state and local tourism bureaus, and brochures on dining & attractions.
- Assemble a car pack with first aid kit, duct tape, fire extinguisher, tools, motor oil, automotive fluids and other materials that could be instrumental in event of a breakdown.
For camping...
- Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) and Costco are excellent places to find outdoor gear like stoves, tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, and tarps. Don't leave home without the right gear, even if it's just frontcountry camping.
- Make a reservation if possible instead of taking chances with a first-come, first-served campground. A select number of state and provincial parks in the West accept reservations.
